New Directions grants fund communities to carry out substance abuse prevention strategies that have proven to help change attitudes or actions. In 1998 twenty-three local coalitions were funded through a three-year federal grant. Although this grant has ended, a majority of coalitions have been able to sustain at least part of their prevention plans. This program is continuing on a smaller scale with Governor's Youth Initiative funding as appropriated by the Vermont Legislature. The program continues to support coalition-building (efforts to actively enlist youth and adults in preventing youth substance use) and programs, such as youth and parent education and mentoring. For more information about New Directions please call (802-786-5979) or e-mail (mliebig@vdh.state.vt.us) Melissa Liebig.

Our Voices Xposed (OVX): OVX is a youth-led, youth-run movement that is focused on exposing the truth about tobacco. OVX is funded with a $1.5 grant to the state of Vermont from the American Legacy Foundation. Find out more about OVX at www.ovx.org.

Robin Rieske: Robin works as a community organizer for the Vermont Department of Health, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs in Brattleboro. She also works with Know Media, a grassroots Media Literacy group out of Windham County. Robin has worked with a variety of audiences including teachers, parents, communities and coalitions to examine the impact of media on issues of substance abuse prevention, body image, violence and other health topics. As a graduate of the New Mexico Media Literacy Projects' Catalyst Training, Robin is also interested in the larger, global issues of Media Literacy, particularly Democracy and other political impact. You can reach Robin at (802)257-2885 or rrieske@vdh.state.vt.us.

Vermont Teen Leadership Safety Program (VTLSP): "The purpose of VTLSP is to support Vermont teens making healthy choices. It provides them with adult support; knowledge of issues such as alcohol/other drug use, traffic safety, risk taking behaviors; and leadership skills to promote a healthy, safe lifestyle among their peers. Affiliation with national organizations such as SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and NSSP (National Student Safety Program) provides expanded opportunities for Vermont's youth leaders." Find out more about VTLSP at www.state.vt.us/educ/vtlsp.
